Major Internet Failure Impacts Many Websites and Apps

An extensive internet outage has affected many sites and applications worldwide, and users noting problems getting online following issues at Amazon’s online infrastructure service.

The affected apps include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned platforms such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring security home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted in addition to its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of difficulties accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on that morning. Also in the UK, many Ring users used online platforms to state their doorbells were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, accounts of issues on specific platforms ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the issue began in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a unit that offers vital internet backbone for numerous companies, who utilize resources on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global online services platform.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the America (morning UK time), officials reported “elevated failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a area on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect was seen to affect apps around the world, with the outage tracking website reporting outages with the same sites in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on Monday morning, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the location of the eastern US data center where the company stated the outage started.
