Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Lineup Against Team India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-match ODI series versus India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

The right-hander was left out from the ODI team following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Updates

There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.

Pace Returns and Injury News

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
