Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Recent Controversies and Public Attention

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
